The psycho persona he potrayed in the first 2 films would have seen him tear Jet Li a new one, yeah Jet Li was one tough MOFO in this but the unstable nature of Riggs in 1 + 2 and his superior fitness would have made it a much better match up!
Easy? No. Even if he would have won, it wouldn't have come easily. Joshua gave him a good fight and if I remember correctly, the guy from LW2 beat the piss out of him.
Edit: Just looked up the clip from the fight for the second movie and didn't realize Riggs had a knife in his leg the entire time. I knew he got stabbed at one point, but I didn't realize it was for the entire length of the fight.
Jet Li was soft against both 40 yo Gibson and 50 yo Glover... because he could have broke their neck in less than 30 seconds in real life and judging by his abilities.

Firstly, Riggs was bad ass in LW 1 and LW2, more stable and older in LW4. In analysis, comparing the actual fights in LW1 between Riggs and Joshua and between Riggs and Wah Sing Ku in lethal LW4, I have concluded that a young more flexible and tougher Riggs would not have defeated Wah Sing Ku. Even though, Ku was not any more immoral or wicked than the other villains in LW1 and LW2 (Vorstedt ) by far, Ku was the tougher, faster, more skilled villain in the entire series. Jet Li`s character is LW4 savior! The fight scenes are exceptionally brutal. Also, in LW4 Ku is up against, albeit older, Murtaugh, who himself is a tough durable man.
Agreed. The OP does not take into account that even younger tougher Riggs struggled against a much much slower and out of shape Mr. Joshua while the Adolf guy in LW2 was really giving it to Riggs with those kicks before he got overconfident and let his guard down.
The character Wah Sing Ku was written as being levels beyond the lethality of Mr. Joshua and the Adolf guy for the simple reason of making LW4 seem like a tougher obstacle for Riggs and Murtaugh.
In honoring the writer's characters then, we can conclude that younger Riggs would have still lost against Wah Sing Ku. Young Riggs would have been able to take more hits but he still isn't fast enough. Some of you guys talk about him having more strength as if Jet Li has no muscles at all. Just because he doesn't like to take off his shirt to look more menacing does not mean he isn't built. Take a look at some of his older work when he was far younger in China in the rare cases where he did have his shirt off, Jet Li is far more physically built in an athletic form than Mel Gibson who is just basic "hit the celebrity gym" built.
At the time of LW1, I doubt that Mel Gibson could have easily defeated Jet Li in an arm wrestling match. So that also removes the argument that Riggs is stronger.
The only advantage Riggs has, is that his will to fight is stronger(in which case is not true during LW4 when he fights Wah Sing Ku).
I was fine with Riggs getting his ass kicked by Jet Li. That was part of the point, Riggs got domesticated, cut his sweet mullet and replaced awesome psycho behavior with pointless joking around. Jet Li's character proved that Riggs was too old for this sh*t. Hell, by this point EVERYBODY was too old for this sh*t.
The Riggs of the first two films was a reckless psycho unafraid of death and danger. It was this killer edge that made him a really gutsy guy and a true hero. But in part 4, we see him sobered down. He still has some traits like breaking his shoulder and then locating it back in place- a really classic moment in the series. But essentially he is now more of a family guy. He is in love, he is thinking of marrying Cole and obviously he has also become old.
But I find it hard to think of anyone else playing Riggs other than good old Mel Gibson.....
Only Riggs of the first 2 films? I love all LW movies and Riggs impressed me the most in LW 3. He did such a cool, risky and so dangerous things. I know, it's just my own opinion but I'd say Riggs of the first 3 films would beat Jet Li (not easily though)
Like saying can a street fighter go up against a MMA fighter.. Now are we talking about real life Mel Gibson vs Jet Li??? Or character vs character in a fictitious world?? If it's fictitious, the writers can make Mel Gibson's character win against Jet Li, but in real life??? I think we all know the answer to that.
