In the movie (1-4) stated that Riggs and Murtaugh are LAPD detective sergeants. According to http://www.joinlapd.com/career_ladder.html, detective and sergeant are different ranks.

Is there a mistake?

I actually think that is just simple error nor plothole

Weren't they prompted to captains at the end of 4?
