Yeah it's all really goofy.
General Grievous & Count Dooku kidnap Chancellor Palpatine, which is a ruse in itself, Dooku is fully aware of the ruse--obviously, he told Obi-Wan in the previous movie that the Sith controlled the Republic Senate--he'd be an idiot to not suspect Palpatine; Darth Sidious--his own master, so Dooku dies without saying a word about the ruse to Anakin--for some stupid reason, and coughing bumbling Grievous flees to a Trade Federation ship.
The Separatist forces depart and accomplish literally nothing, lose so much, and lose one of their leaders. It makes it look like an act of desperation, and probably planned to look that way by Palpatine.
It make you wonder, is Grievous in on Palpatine's baloney as well? Because if he is, it makes sense--he's supposed to keep up the act. If he isn't aware of Palpatine's baloney, which is more likely, then why does he bumble about like an idiot for the rest of the movie instead of regrouping his Separatist fleet? That said, why do the leaders of the Trade Federation & others take orders from the shrouded Darth Sidious? What could they possibly gain by listening to him? Sidious has done absolutely nothing to enhance the war effort for them.
