Kim Dickens

Should have been nominated for Supp. Actress for this film

I totally agree. Unfortunately I don't think the film garnered enough attention. Highly overlooked film.

reply

Totally disagree. She's the only flaw in the film. She's totally miscast. She's not attractive, her bland face, with overplucked eyebrows is really annoying and painful to stare at the whole film. Her acting is awful. Horrible. At least be attractive if you're going to be awful.

I'm going to totally disagree with you James. I have read through some of your other posts here and found them thoughtful even when I disagreed with them. Maybe it's a matter of age (I'm in my late 40's) and living through those times. I first saw this film in its theatrical release and now in its entirety on netflix. I can say its a small film that has stuck with me through the years. Kim is very attractive and quite in her times and character in the film. Would you expect a female EMT in the late 90's to be wearing lots of makeup and have a boob job? This isn't 'Baywatch'. She, her character, grew up in tough circumstances, never quite fitting in, much like Zero. She was self reliant and smart. Looks and relationships were not part of the picture much like our hero. Kim's recent role in 'Treme' played upon those very acting talents.

I didnt think she was very good either. Probably why she hasnt been in too many films.

I thought she was cute (though not that smart, and not a terrific actress).

But 1998 wasn't that long ago, times haven't changed that much (aside from some moronic socialist tendencies lurking around), and I suspect the other poster also lived through 1998.

reply

Agreed. She was terrific. Very credible, not Hollywoodish at all. Well cast.

Update on Ms Dickens. I recently saw her in a Brian Cox film called "Red". She has had them done....

Boo! (on the boob job) You don't need it, Kim. Only someone who cares more about their own gratification than the physical and emotional well being of another would cheer that.

Anyway, I thought she was great in the film. She was very intriguing, and she didn't let her emotions show too much. That's kind of what you'd expect from a blackmailer, right? But she also had some surprises, like (spoilers ahead) her propensity to shoot things and jump out of airplanes. She was just what Darryl needed, someone who could challenge him intellectually, understand him emotionally, and empathize with him physically. "She was the only woman..."

She was perfect in the film. She nailed Gloria.

And, for me, she is beautiful, sexy, graceful, and a pretty decent actress.

Wish my girlfriend looked like her.

Just my opinion.

reply

Most notable flaw of the movie I felt. Just not as strong a scene presence as the rest of the cast. My wife's opinion was "her only emotions seem to be vacant and constipated".

"I promise to start growin' dope again and get my life back on track."

Count me on the "agree" side. The part was written with such subtlety that very few actresses could have pulled it off as well as she did. But it's definitely TOO subtle to ever garner the attention of the academy, unfortunately.

reply

I thought she was a very pleasent, placid, intelligent and emotionally mature presence - and she pretty, too. Definitely a fine performance.

I agree! I thought she was perfect for this part and had what any great actress needs--charisma (in a very quiet, intense way). I could not take my eyes off of her. Her acting was totally real and believable to me. There was a tension and a constant look in her eye that showed her general sadness about her life circumstances (mother murdered, etc.) I wish she had done more quirky roles.

Just saw it again. This made me a fan. She was great in Deadwood. Almost too pretty/sexy.

reply

She was perfect for the part. I like her in most things, but this might be my favorite role of hers.
