Great concept, awesome visuals, but needed a little more
I've not read the book, but I can imagine this is a case where the movie makers strived to reach a running time under 2 hours and shortcutted a lot of stuff. I was really expecting much more of a struggle/fight to have to save her in hell. I think there needed to be at least another 20-30 minutes and most of it really spent on that part of the story. You don't build it up, saying it's impossible, etc. and then have that whole part last maybe 10-12 minutes and mostly him talking about her/him/the kids and what happened. Especially with the journey being what it was up to that point, it seemed rather anticlimactic.
I don't know what exactly I was expecting, but more than that. I'm also not sure I like Robin Williams that much in that role, not that he did poorly, just didn't feel quite right.
