Good Story, lousy casting

Annabella Sciorra was the wrong choice for this project. I felt zero chemistry between she and Williams and no feeling at all for her depiction of Annie. I think Anette Benning would have been a much better choice.

reply

I thought she was great, but I agree about the lack of chemistry. I thought Robin Williams was the wrong choice.

reply

Agreed, but yeah.Robin Wiiliams was the mistake.
R.Williams wasnt terrible, but Anna Bell was very good and right for the part.

They just weren't believable as a soulmate couple IMO,so the bulk of the film's emotional weight was just too light for me.

I agree that Robin Williams was the wrong choice. Totally! I mean the very first line in the movie is "When I was young..." Robin Williams has looked old and hairy since, well probably since he was a child.
There were moments when I thought he was ok, like when he was at the hospital being a doctor. But then there were some emotional scenes, like where he had to cry where I asked myself if I myself should cry or laugh at his unconvincing acting.
Max von Sydow was awesome though!
But I still love this film

reply

I disagree. They both excelled at their roles. Robin Williams did an especially great job.

reply

I agree with Snot. I love Robin Williams, who couldn't, but I don't think he was right for this role.

reply

I agree. I didn't buy the relationship between them. I also felt that, while he gave a good dramatic performance, Robin Williams was struggling not to make a wisecrack at every opportunity. In fact, he did make quite a few. Not that it's a bad thing (after all, he's a comedian first and foremost) but he was definitely cast against type in this film. However, I will give credit where it's due. The scene where he describes how he imagined his son would be at age 25 had me in tears. Robin Williams can do drama surprisingly well.

Robin Williams screwed up the movie, Popeye, too. Should've gotten Jim Carrey for that role.

reply

Him Carrey was a kid when Popeye was made, dumdum

reply

I've always thought Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra were perfect for this movie. Annie is more withdrawn, in life and death, and Christy is the one who always saves her. both actors expressed that perfectly.

and then Robin Williams committed suicide 8/11/14, and I watched this movie again.

wow. just wow. the casting was eerily perfect.

_________
don't blink

reply

Disagree. RW was the wrong choice- he's not sexual so he doesn't have chemistry with women

reply

Yeah, it's pretty obvious casting choices were wrong. The script needs strong dramatic actors and RW just didn't have the chops. The kids were pretty bad too in their brief scenes.
