Maybe pay closer attention to it the next time. No one knows the "rules" exactly. It's not clear that there are any, because the core idea seems to be that people create their own worlds in the afterlife.
Not try to make assumptions but I find that most of the people who didn't care for the film are people who have very strong pre-conceived ideas of heaven/hell/afterlife. It's just a film, it's fantasy, if you just go with it and allow it to simply be a representation of what heaven/hell/afterlife may be like (which none of us knows for sure) then it's much better. After all, can you prove there are no rules in the afterlife? Can you even prove there is an afterlife? It's just a film - definitely not the worst film ever made - I rather enjoyed it and found the colors and scenes beautiful. I loved the IDEA that someone could be in love so much that they would risk their eternal happiness for another. Sappy? Maybe, but I'm tired of action films and murders and smut movies. I found this to be a nice break.
Quite the opposite, I make no assumptions about "afterlife" and I don't really believe it exists. Organized religion has created the idea of afterlife as a way to allow people to deal with their own mortality, and as a way of manipulating human behavior.
This film presumes to present an absurd afterlife along these narrow lines (the idea that one's afterlife is dependent on their behavior on earth). So, what about a person born with severe depression who commits suicide, they are condemned to the bad place? Is this how god operates?
I think even in an allegorical interpretation of heaven and hell in the bible, it doesn't refer to a real afterlife, but rather, how one's life turns out in the real world.
Have you read "The Divine Comedy"? It's an amazing, centuries old text about a poets journey from hell all the way to heaven. As an atheist who has studied work religions, I love this film. It's fantasy and high art.
To the original poster, if you have to vent, don't say worst movie ever made because you will sound like a dumbass who hasn't watched many films. What Dreams May Come(1998) is clearly not one of the worst movies ever made.
I can see how this could be the worst movie you've ever seen. It was unbelievable that he'd be able to 'change hell' to get her out of it. The thing that annoyed me about this movie is the long blah blah blah moments discussing soul mates. It was like: you're dead in a heaven that changes however you want it to! Enjoy it instead of blabbing about soul mates for the zillionth time.
The original poster said that it's the worst film they themselves have ever seen so far in their lives. It's not unbelievable that they just haven't seen many really horrible movies that are far worse than this movie. I don't think this is the worst movie I personally have ever seen. I've watched it a couple times and I do like sci fi, fantasy, and romance movies usually. I just disliked the focus on soul mates because it made me sad that he wasn't concerned about where his children were in the afterlife and was instead focused on his wife still. Also this movie is difficult to watch if a person is having a difficult time in their life. I was pretty sad about things happening in my life the first time I saw it and it made me feel worse especially after seeing the scenes with the wife's breakdown and her hell. This movie just isn't for everyone especially people who are going through a difficult time.
