Maybe I missed something but was Mandy Slade (Toni Collette) supposed to be American. I thought I might have heard that, and just want to make sure, because if she really was British, it seemed like she wasn't really trying to maintain her British accent.

She switches from British to American. She's an American who lived over there for years so she picked up some words but not all, or couldn't get rid of her original accent completely. That's how it goes unless you move as a child because of schools. It can get annoying and sounds like a big mistake, but Toni Colette is too good of an actress to let something that wrong slide. Plus it adds to her character's phases and ever changing fashion.
sharei think it was meant to be an over the top "sweetie darling" accent which she put on to impress people. years later the accent changes, cause she is no longer in that scene.
shareMy (American) aunt spoke just like that. She went to London at 18, after 10 years there she went to Wales. She speaks many words in an American accent, many words in a UK accent... you just pick it up from being around others speaking like that.
shareI thought her accent was the high point of genius in a film that had both very high and very low points. Mandy's accent changes with her persona. When she is the Glam Wife, the Superstar, she has the English accent. When she loses that, she reverts to her American accent (which she does beautifully -- she could have taught Ewan MacGregor a thing or two), indulging only in a British accent occasionally when discussing a bittersweet memory. Oh, she's a genius, Toni Colette is -- in a movie full of genius actors (a mess of a a movie, but genius actors) she shines brighter than any of them.
