In the ship scene, there shouldn't have been any witnesses
Gerard went there with the intention of killing Sheridan, but then decided against it. It's not entirely clear why he decided against it, but he couldn't have done it, because of all the witnesses. If there were no witnesses, it would've made the scene much more powerful. He could've easily killed him and claimed it was self defence, nobody would've questioned it. It would've been clear he decided against it because he realised it was wrong.
