this doesn't really bother me or affect my enjoyment of this movie, but does anybody else think that all the boob shots (if memory serves there are 4 or 5 of them) all feel edited in in post production? they are all cutaway shots, headless, and more or less unnecessary for the scenes' continuities. the conspicuous nature of this makes me suspect that these are in fact the boobs of breast stunt doubles, as it were. is it just me or do you guys think maybe body doubles were used? i was hoping the "trivia" tag for this movie would shed some light on this issue but there's none listed.
just curious if i'm the only one perverted enough to notice.
maybe you should take another look, cuz breasts are exposed..I have a feeling that they are doubles...based on the shots they used...regardless....it doesn't change the fact that this is one of my favourite movies...
On some cable movie channels they edit the movies to be suitable for younger audiences that happen to come upon the movie. On channels such a Bravo they tend to take thoes parts out.
Please tell me you say that with tongue in cheek. She's talented but winning the statue for her role in "My Cousin Vinnie" is an absolute joke (see also Mira Sorvino in "Mighty Aphrodite," Kim Basinger in "L.A. Confidential," Renee Zellweger in "Cold Mountain, et al). The Best Supporting Actress awards has been a farce ever since Whoopi Goldberg won it in 1990 for her role in "Ghost". Don't believe me? Check it yourself:
The word "actor" is indeed gender-neutral, so a female who acts can be called either an actor or an actress. I'm fine with that, but you do realize that the Academy (a peer group with many actor and actress members) makes the gender distinction when handing out awards.
I agree to an extent. I have no problem using gender-neutral terminology, but it does run into a bit of a problem come awards time. One solution would be to eliminate the gender distiction and to have male and female actors compete for the awards. This might create an obvious problem though.
What actress & actor has refused the Best Supporting award?

Re: breast doubles? by - dodea7584 on Mon Apr 23 2007 09:30:04 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't you know there is no such thing as an "actress". Men and women who act are all "actors". That is why for the past ten years female "actors" have all refused to accept their Oscars for "best actree" and "best supporting actress" becasue they are ot hypocrits
Your observation was correct. I saw this movie on the IFC network and they stated that Ms. Lyonne wore some major padding in this movie. One can assume that means it was someone else's boobs we saw on screen. Whoever she was, I applaud her work!
It's been a while since I saw this flick, but I'd like to think the scene where Marisa's character flashes her tits is really Marisa. I know it sounds naive, but she just might have really nice ones hiding underneath her blouse- at least the look on her face gave me that impression.
Both Natasha and Marisa had doubles for the movie (as you can usually tell when it's just a breast shot without a face), although Marisa would do famous topless scenes in "Before the devil Knows You're Dead" and "The Wrestler" about a decade later.
If you take the time to look at Natasha's Page, you'll see her breast size is 32A. The puppies shown are at least a C-cup. Plus, just look at her in the American Pies.
i have no definite knowledge, but also noticed the use of body doubles. Every scene featuring naked breasts is a close-up stationary shot, with no other part of the actress visible.
The only (possible) exception is the scene in the Cadillac. However, as I recall, this is a very brief long shot in which neither the breasts or the actress are clearly discernible. A body double may be in use in this shot also.
Why would they use doubles? Well, as previously mentioned, the lead actress has small breasts but the character has to have reasonably large breasts to fit the plot (she is horrified by their large size).
Possible reasons for the use of a double for Marisa Tomei? (I am pretty sure a double was used for her; as already pointed out, her breasts are smaller than those we see onscreen.) Well, she may not have been prepared to show her breasts onscreen, or the producers weren't prepared to pay the extra fee for her to do so, or her breasts were deemed too small or insufficiently attractive (perish the thought!). It may even be that the breast shots were edited-in in post production in an effort to increase the film's attractions - so to speak.
Of course, Tamara Jenkins (writer and director), assuming she wanted the shots included, may give another explanation. She may claim that the breast shots were deliberately disassociated from the characters in order to portray the difference between that characters' sexuality and who they were as people - or some such PC attitude.
The truth, of course, is that film makers feature naked actresses (and sex scenes) in an effort to attract more paying customers. And actresses remove their clothes for money (that is why they ask for higher pay when nudity is involved). Neither they, or the film makers, do it because it is "necessary to the plot" - any more than topless bars exist for the comfort of the waitresses working in hot conditions.
"Neither they, or the film makers, do it because it is "necessary to the plot" - any more than topless bars exist for the comfort of the waitresses working in hot conditions!"
I'll even go so far as to say they used the SAME body double for both Natasha's AND Marisa's topless scenes! Anybody else think that? The exposed breasts are of a similar size and color.
"Tomei identified totally with first-time writer-director Tamara Jenkins' script for Slums of Beverly Hills. She, too, came of age in the '70s, although unlike her character, she wasn't cursed by being excessively blessed by the boob gods. "I felt the opposite way: 'OK, when am I going to get mine?' " Tomei's only reservation about her fresh-out-of-rehab character was "the little underwear sets. I really was, like, 'I'm not sure if I'm going to take this because I just don't want to prance around in my underwear the whole time.' I overcame it, obviously."
She also overcame the embarrassment of helping cast her own body double. "I had to look for a pair of breasts and I had to look for a butt. The costume designer was with me, and she was like, 'You should just do your own [nude scenes].' You start thinking, well, maybe it's worth taking the risk." Tomei glances down melodramatically: "I think they're fine... but I just couldn't." And then there was the exuberant dance with a buzzing vibrator. "I didn't know that it was quite going to be a whole dance number," she says wryly. "On the page it was just 'then they dance.'"
Who cares boobs are boobs, lets be honest here we all dont care much who they are attached to as long as we can drool over them. I can find sufficiant cause to persuade myself body double or not that those cans were hers either way I win it is a great way of looken at it.
