Ended abruptly

The movie was great, had me interested in all the characters and their lives, then it just sort of ended. None of the conflicts were resolved, all kinds of threads were left dangling, and it was such a downer.

If anyone could tell me if this was based on a book, was there anything more to it after they sort of drove off?

People are too trained to expect an ending all wrapped up in a nice bow. This film chose to end in a realistic way. The situation of their lives continues, but they have learned a bit and had new realizations.
