Cheesy, corny and schmaltzy
It's basically a nacho platter. Outside of the opening battle sequence, this movie is a typical Spielberg cornfest. He is the king of “lowest common denominator” filmmaking.

shareSo it appealed to you in a big way?
shareThe cheesiness is just melodrama. This is Spielberg letting out his inner Frank Capra. Frankly, I wish all common denominator filmmakers were as well versed in the cinematic form.
shareSounds like you have more of a problem with Spielberg. Go over to his board and complain there.
shareHah-hah.
shareI beg to differ.
The opening Dday sequence has plenty of cheese corn and schmaltz too.
How many "ironic" vignettes can you cram on a battlefield to show the horror before it becomes preachy and unrealistic?
Just plain old getting killed does not resonate with Spielbergo anymore that he needs to beat his viewers on the head with "war is so randomly crazy, man!" gags?
Even all the acclaimed mise en scene and cinematography is cheesy, corny and schmaltzy. It pathetically strives for realism with such heavyhandedness that it achieves the opposite effect of comedy and detachment.
I find it all very entertaining. Is there here any of its fans that doesnt?
Is such a sequence supposed to be entertaining or is that a total failure on its part?
Maybe it would be better if you articulated some specific examples
shareLook the higher schoolers took film school for a day.
Now tell us which comic book films we’ll be discussing in 25 years. Hint: the answer rhymes with none.
Wow, STFU.
It should have won best picture in 1998 but also I like the end battle finale as well. To me its one of the best action sequences of the 90s.
