The opening 26 mins are outstanding, as is the final battle.
For US flagwavers, no doubt every minute was a masterpiece, but the middle and saccharine finale were boring. Only Americans love the sickly-sweet stuff in lieu of genuine emotion well done.
Actually it's not universally loved. It has its moments but I never understood why people think so highly of it. Also, the opening which people always talk about has, I think, been bettered by other films in terms of realistic chaos and violence - Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers for example.
Excuse my friend Kowalski, when he said that SPR is universally loved, he should have thought about you, because the fact that you don't like it means it is in fact NOT universally loved.
Whilst that is technically correct I think it's also worth looking at the figures in Box Office Mojo. SPR, along with Forrest Gump, shows something like half the earnings are from the USA alone. I would suggest this shows it is of particular appeal to the American audience - and perhaps less so to the rest of the world?
I think it's loved all over the world. I'm from Finland and this is one of my favourite films. And I know that critics and audiences love it here too. Just my two cents.
