Best war movie of all time?

What do you think?

1. Saving Private Ryan
2. Apocalypse Now
3. Full Metal Jacket
4. The Thin Red Line

IMHO

reply

None of the above. Furthermore, I think the whole idea of selecting one movie as the best of ANY particular genre is ridiculous. This is especially true with the genre "war movies".

War is a human endeavor that is as old as humanity itself. How can one judge a movie that depicts warriors in, say, 19th century America as being better or worse than one that depicts warriors in say feudal Japan? Or, how can one say a movie that concentrates on aerial combat in WWI is better than one that concentrates on submarine warfare in WWII? It would IMHO be better, and more appropriate to compare movies that compare the same, or similar events within the broader genre of war movies than to try and anoint one as being the best of such a broad category. It's like trying to decide what is the funniest movie of all time. Opinions vary, and none of them are wrong.

you must be fun at parties... i think the "connection" between the movies apointed above is pretty obvious, thats why i didnt list Braveheart, Spartacus, etc.

reply

Don't get your panties in a wad, junior. You didn't say anything about choosing from those four, genius. I'm merely making a point about the incessant threads on this board trying to pick the "best" war movie. I think it's futile for the reasons I stated. The subject is too big to fairly pick a winner from all the possibilities. So, calm down, lose the chip from your shoulder, and try to be a bit more articulate.

'roadkill' you make excellent points in both of your posts. Part of the issue here is that the OP was very sloppy in composing his post. Another part is trying to identify "the best", what he probably really means is "which one do you prefer to watch?" And he could have improved his post if he had added, "What is your favorite that is not on the list of four that I posted?"

"Best war movie" is a silly exercise, "favorite war movie" may have some merit.

Why is it so many make themselves impervious to constructive suggestions?

Thank you. That is essentially what I was trying to say. Well done.

How so?

Part of the issue here is that the OP was very sloppy in composing his post.

No, he wasn't. He asked a simple question.

Another part is trying to identify "the best", what he probably really means is "which one do you prefer to watch?"

No, which one do you think is the best? It's really simple.

And he could have improved his post if he had added, "What is your favorite that is not on the list of four that I posted?"

It appears he ranked the ones he considers the best in order.

"Best war movie" is a silly exercise, "favorite war movie" may have some merit.

It's subjective, not silly.

Why is it so many make themselves impervious to constructive suggestions?

So many what?

I'd just ignore the dude, from what I can tell in a cursory glance at this mediocre film's board he's got waaaaay too much time on his hands, and a massive chip on his shoulder about...something lol

Why? It's a matter of personal taste. Nothing wrong with sharing picks and knowing why someone would pick something over the other. It's a means of conversation.

War is a human endeavor that is as old as humanity itself. How can one judge a movie that depicts warriors in, say, 19th century America as being better or worse than one that depicts warriors in say feudal Japan?

We're talking about movies here. If you know your history or have actual history in warfare, then that's a story or conversation all by itself. Judging by the merits of the film and its quality (or lack thereof) is what it's about.

War films are war films. Pick your time and pick your war. They can be compared and contrasted every which way. The OP is asking a simple question. It's not meant to challenge you to the degree of feeling put off.

It's like trying to decide what is the funniest movie of all time. Opinions vary, and none of them are wrong.

So why claim it's ridiculous for selecting a film as the best, according to the individual?

Consider the thread title. Everything else I've already explained. No need to do it again.

He is obviously talking about movies depicting modern warfare you raging autist.

Why do the most idiotic people think they are the most intelligent? That I'll never get.

reply

Then he should say so, you blithering idiot.

Who is claiming to be the most intelligent? I'll never get why you seem to read things that just aren't there.
