It's WW take was only 100M on a 33M budget. In 2017, that's an instant franchise death and would not have spawned any sequels.

As you stated, "in 2017". This movie was released in 2002 and the DVD market was quite different. This movie made a killing on DVD. I don't have the exact sales numbers on hand, but it likely matched its theatrical gross in DVD sales and rentals.

It feels if it were stand alone or only had the first sequel it would be more fondly remembered
