I agree. I also think it's Liev Schreiber's best role to date.

Well obviously--I mean, the guy was playing possibly the most influential film director in history, who also happened to be one of the most eccentric, talented, and troubled men in Hollywood history. I do agree, however, Schreiber's voice did match Welles, which in itself is a feat since Welles has, I think, one of the most distinctive voices.

One problem I had with this film was the relationship between Mankciwiezc and Welles. It sort of came off as a homoerotic thing, particulary with the scene where they are laying on the beach under the moonlight. Though I am not personall gay, it seems like being on the beach in the moonlight with a heterosexual relationship is a romantic situation, except here we have two men. Both are great creative minds, no less, but still. Not sure if that was intended or just coincidence...

i thought Liev Schreiber was terrible in this. not that he's a bad actor, he just wasn't up to playing Welles convincingly.

Vincent D'Onofrio in Ed Wood on the other hand... WOW, phenomenal. he WAS Orson Welles.

yeah but he was dubbed over by Maurice LaMarche. do the homework. (or listen to the commentary)

I never understood why they dubbed over D'Onofrio with "The Brain". Dont get me wrong, though. I love the Brain.

As for Schreiber - I dunno. Love him as an actor, but I think he was hampered by the dialogue in the script. There were some real eye-rolling moments in this film. Especially the FICTIONAL meeting with the studio heads (including a very milqutoasty Walt Disney) where Orson supposedly dares to represent them all "for a higher cause - art". Bull. Orson was well aware that he would be a rising star, but he only viewed Kane as his first step. This movie makes him too self-aware of the importance of the film. The documentary on which this was based was MUCH better.

My vote for the best Orson goes to Angus McFayden in Cradle Will Rock. If you know anything about Orson (especially YOUNG Orson) he was, to put it mildly, an A--hole. I still admire the man, but watch the relationship between him and Cary Elwes in that movie and it's EXACTLY like most people remember it. They were so into the characters of Welles and Houseman that in real life they didn't talk to each other because they developed an intense HATRED for each other's guts. I think Liev COULD play Orson well, but he'd need a better script. There were too many cliches here. Not that there weren't any in Cradle.

Also, my vote for best Liev performance is in The Manchurian Candidate remake. I actually liked it better than the original, although I wish Frank would have come back form the dead to replace Denzel.

I agree with you Gilly. Live was fantastic in this role! He had all of Orson's mannerisms. It was fantastic!
