Sally and Gillian's Mother?

Anyone know what exactly happened to her? Why didn't she stay with her daughters at the aunt's house after the death of her husband? I don't think it was explained in the movie. I also read the book years ago...but now I really cannot remember that piece of it at all. Though I remember lots of parts in the book that weren't made in the movie, I suppose they begin to blend into each other after a while.

Thoughts?

She died of a broken heart. They say so during the scene when Sally and Gillian are still kids. It's one of the reasons why Sally never wants to fall in love. I always wondered if this was code for "committed suicide," especially since Gillian asks Sally, "Do you forgive our mother?" But considering how the movie uses the concept of magic, it's entirely possible she did die of a broken heart.
