Did either of them enter a bathroom + wonder where the toilet was?

That was one of the things about tv shows @ that time. Toilets were not to be shown. Just thought that might make an interesting subplot.

I'm surprised the writers didn't think of that.

It did happen didn't it? Reese Witherspoon goes in to the toilet, opens the cubicle and it's empty.

Maybe I'm missing something here

Cher: Would you call me selfish?
Dee: No, not to your face.

It was a big issue in the shower scene in Psycho, because you saw the toilet.

reply

Yeah, it happened in the diner when she was on her date.

It IS interesting that now days, many shows and movies show toilets... even p!$$ing for some reason.... I'm not sure why... almost NO PLOT on the planet would ever require a scene showing toilts or people doing thier deed.

I suppose close ups of yummy dog $#!t is next for cinemas next push of our tolerances? Why? just stupid, lazy writting if they can't come up with anything better than a bathroom scene.

I think there are way too many movies and tv shows that show people throwing up all the time. That's what I can't stand and most of the time, there is no reason to show it. We know what's going to happen if you get sick or drunk, etc.

reply

Oh, really? you think so?

Pineapple Express, hiding in the bathroom, and throwing the portable phone in the toilet to render it, useless.

Now it's more noticeable that you see toilets but if you notice, some shows don't flush or that you only see someone sitting on it. If we "pleasantvilled" our way to the show and tried to use it, I may not work. Lol.

Older shows around that area never had a scene in the bathroom much less and scene with a toilet do there was no need to show it.

Actually they did have toilets on situation comedies during the fifties. They were usually located down the hall from the sound stage. LOL Also I may be remembering it wrong but there was an episode of "Leave It to Beaver" where the Beav' kept a baby alligator in a toilet tank. That would give PETA fits today.

Seriously the whole point of the scene was toilets never appeared in fifties and sixties TV shows. That may have been something of a standards and practices thing. Any reminder of bodily waste might gross out the audience. Back then people called toilet paper TP. Even today if I used the abbreviation for sewage held in transit would get me kicked off this board.

If you can believe it, it's pretty much the same today. Unless we're talking cable ofc.

They made a specific point of showing there was no toilet. This is because there could be nothing unpleasant in Pleasantville, and toilets are for an unpleasant function.

reply

Bingo! I can't believe how many posters in this thread didn't get it.

I did wonder, Jennifer must have gone in their for a reason! So if she felt the need to go to the toilet, why doesn't anyone else!

reply

Girls don't poop anyways so there's no reason for a big old nasty toilet in the girls bathroom.
I'm sure the boys bathroom had toilets though.
