Since It's Pleasantville I'm guessing there is just enough fire to grill stuff & it's just there.
shareRight. It is not pleasant when your house burns, so houses don't burn.
It is pleasant that charcoal grill burns (but only at a barbeque) so it burns there.
Flames exist, you know, even there ... after all, Jennifer says, "Look! Nothing burns!" and immediately gets her cigarette lighter burning as part of showing that nothing burns.
The same way the mother had to find out about the birds and the bees from her daughter.
