everclear - overwhelmed

Does it mean, that he defeated the drugs and that he won't let them 'overwhelm him anymore' and will not 'let them hurt him anymore'? Or why this song?

I'm not sure that Alexakis wrote the song for the soundtrack knowing that the film was about a man's drug addiction. Alexakis was working on a solo project around that time that he eventually ditched, which is why on the soundtrack album which I have and highly reccomend, the song is credited to him, not Everclear. He probably threw it to the producers thinking it one of the better of the bunch. That's just my speculation though.

And a great song by the way! Glad to see someone mention it. Even alot of hardcore Alexakis fans I've talked to don't know of it, mostly because this VERY GOOD movie and it's accompanying soundtrack went unnoticed.

To me though it's a song that reflects one of the themes that Alexakis uses in his songwriting over and over. A man who has experienced troubled/dysfunctional relationships (whether they be romantic or family) in the past and wants to protect the people he loves now from having to go through the same thing. It's a really beautiful song and I was hoping he would play it when I saw him live recently but he didn't. Obviously everyone but like the five people each year that post on this board have all but forgotten this great film, book and soundtrack.
