When he got pulled over. . .

When Jerry got pulled over by the cops with his baby, he showed them his license and they immediately kicked him out of the car and called social services. My question is why? I know the guy was a heroin addict, but what grounds did they have for arrest based only on his license and registration?!

He didnĀ“t have a drivers license, he probably just gave the cop his membership card at the videostore or something...

Yeh, I forgot about that.

i read the book and in the book as he was getting back into the car. the needle rolled underneath the seat and the cop saw it. the cop said "you are a sorry F@$%k and that what ever postion he was in now is worse than any place he could put him". i never saw the movie so i dont know what happened there. The cop let him go and never called social services. Jerry just drove home and put the baby to sleep and got off in the bathroom. he waid he wasnt even worthy of being arrested he was such a low life

In the film the cop could tell, and see, by the way Jerry was driving that he was A) under the influence (drink) or B) (drugs) and that he should not have been in charge of the infant. So he called Social services to take care of the baby and arrested Jerry for the offence. My take on it anyhow!

If I were a cop and saw a guy with an infant who was also putting needles in himself, wouldn't care if he were the father. You gotta save the baby.

That being said, I think this is a great film.

Thanks for that clarification. But from the scene in the movie he was so clearly high that if I were that cop I would have had him arrested anyway just to make sure the baby was safe.

I guess in real life the cop didn't arrest him/take the baby away which is ok for an autobiography but in a Hollywood film I think you really have to reassure the audience that the baby gets taken care of. It might also have been a quicker way to get to Jerry's "wake-up call" because it's got to wrap-up eventually.

reply

Exactly! Audiences would not have responded well to the cop just leaving an infant with a junkie, but I could see it happening in real life, especially with a police force that sees so much of this type of thing, I'd imagine they would eventually become jaded.

Obviously, you guys have you never watched Trainspotting.

I liked that movie, but I haven't watched it in years, the scene with the baby in that move always gets me so bad! That was also set in an entirely different country than Permanent Midnight though, different setting as well.

I'm sorry, this movie isn't good. Is it awful? No. But truly a disappointment. If you haven't read the book, then I urge you to do so.

Which Book? Permanent Midnight or Train Spotting? I had a copy of Train Spotting, but I never cracked the cover so I let my roommate borrow it & I forgot it when I moved out, I need some good fiction! I might pick up a copy of both! I read that there was a lot of editorializing in Permanent Midnight, which is not really a bad thing.
