Why did one twin say "We've been punished until the end of the century! We played a couple harmless tricks on Maredith".
I mean, their dad FINALLY realized that Meredith was a bitch which is why he left her, so why would he punish them for the pranks. They did a good thing by chasing her away.
I'm a parent so I'll look at it from a parents point of view. The punishment was most likely a lesson in respecting adults who not matter how awful they are. Pranks can also be dangerous and people can get hurt.
But if you look at it from the view of the movie the problem is if they hadn't done the pranks their dad would likely have never found out how awful she was. He wouldn't have believed them if they told him how awful she was.
I forgot to add he said to the mom he'd have to remember to thank them one day.
