1961 VS. 1998
okay so BOTH were great movies. Were there parts of the remake that you thought should have been in the original, or vice versa? Reflections? Complaints? Comparisons?

Have to agree..both are truly great entertainment for all ages...
I thought that the '61 version actually built up the "antagonism" between the twins at camp a little better..with the dance sequence etc. In the re-make this part felt a little rushed in my opinion,although the poker game was great!
Overall, I have to say the '98 version is my favourite..everything just comes together so well..the script,the performances,the music,are all top notch.

I think the fact that the '98 version has "serious mature topics" as you put it Twin Card,is why it has endured for so long...it appeals to a wide audience.
I can't think of many kids films that are appreciated by adults just as much as kids.
Thinking about the '61 version..its just occurred to me that there was much more actual physical violence in it!
Im thinking about Sharon/Susan fighting and slapping each other in the face,and the Mom punching the Dad..nobody seemed to think that that was unsuitable for kids when it was made.Just shows how attitudes change!

I like the 1961 version better. The guitar/piano song for their parents was nice though so badly faked, the intro song with the dolls was a nice touch as well. The mom, Maggie was gorgeous, and this new one, Elizabeth while attractive, can't compare.
I think its cool that Vicki in the old one is now the hussy's mom in the new one.
You call being re-run on ABC Family ten years later "enduring for all these years"? And I don't know that many adults impressed by the 1998 version.
And Vicki slapping the girl across the face, she would go to jail

Also there is a funny non=Disney reference to (former & original big-studio sound era Disney distributor*) Columbia Pictures's 1957 Oscvar winer "Bridge over the River Kwai"'s famous "theme"** "Colonel Bogey March'!
*After the "states-rights" & Pat Powers era andf after the silent era of Oswald and Universal, before they had Walter Lanrtz do those.
**Not actually written for that "River Kwai".
There's no comparison. The 1961 version was excellent. The 1998 version was half baked.
shareI loved the original growing up, and thought a remake was uncessary, but the 98 version turned out to be very well done as well. One thing that I thought was actually an improvement over the original was the character of the butler; I found him to be an amusing addition to the story.

I prefer the original. The new one was okay, but I am not a huge fan of all the remakes. I grew up watching the originals on the Disney Channel and I enjoy them more. I think this one has a few topics that I find rather inappropriate for kids. Which is the same as all the remakes, but it makes me feel questionable of whether or not I approve of them for my kids to watch.

-I knew this was a remake when it came out when I was 10. I grew up with the 1998 one and still love it lol, watching it now on CMT actually, its just a feel good movie that brings me right back to being a kid watching it on the Disney channel. The original is good, but I think I like this one better, I think its just because the 1998 one is my generation I guess. I never get sick of it :)

As for 1961 vs. 1998...
The remake is better. I love old movies, but the original is just boring and all the slapping was slightly irritating. The actors are really its only saving grace.
While other places have ponies or parrots... we have DRAGONS. share

The parents physically fighting, including black-eye punches to the eye socket -- holy smokes, I can't believe anybody EVER thought that was a good idea in a "family" movie.
Brian Keith always seemed like a jerk (as he later did on 'Family Affair').
I am a huge huge Maureen O'Hara fan but she looked fat, frumpy and dowdy (she looked much better in 'Spencer's Mountain' 2 years later so it wasn't just age).
And Hayley Mills was -- sorry to put it bluntly -- an UGGGGLLY kid.
To me, the 1998 version stomps all over the original in every way.
