Question about Murrieta brothers scene.....?

As they are getting ready to leave after outsmarting the guards in town, a local man says to Joaquin something along the lines of "They have a box on the wagon" and Joaquin says "We know,that's why we came".

I think I'm really missing something here, but are they referring to gold or something? I didn't get it. Can anyone help?

It's a strong-box - ie contains money, jewels, gold, basically it's very high value. In this case I think it's the taxes just collected from the locals.
