This is another of the historical inaccuracies. Monterro says that the Mexican government has agreed to sell Alta California and the area to the east of it because they are embroiled in war with the United States. The supposed setting of the movie, 1841, was five years before the Mexican-American War started. I'm not an expert on U.S. military uniforms before the Civil War, but I suspect that the uniform worn by Captain Love came from a period after 1841. I would also find it hard to believe that a conniving governor of a huge province would settle for an American captain when he could have hired a Prussian or French colonel or general to lead his little army.
