Did my eyes deceive me or did Alejandro drink his brother's head juice?

Did I miss something or did he really take a swig out of the jar that was containing his brother's decapitated head? I had to do a double take on that one. Awfully disgusting. But I'm sure that wine had a helluva NOSE! (Badada-ding.)

You are not wrong; he did do that.

I know, gross. I used to think he spit it out, once outside, before I just watched the movie again.

I think he did it as a sign of strength to General Love. To show that he could care less about who is in the jar, not revealing it's his brother. Also, if General Love finds out who Alejandro is, he will rat out to raphael that he is not a noble/Don.

^Good one. Tell your mom that she's smart. Like another poster said he was a spy so he could reveal his true nature or else. Love eventually finds out but that's until later.

Yeah this freaked me out too until I saw the movie The Devil's Backbone recently.
In that movie they have these stillborn fetuses in glass jars with this liquid that preserves them. It takes place in Spain and one of the characters explains that the locals believe that if you drink the liquid that it brings strength and keeps away bad spirits.

This synopsis from Constructinghorror.com explains it a little better:

The story begins with the elderly professor giving an eloquent definition of a ghost, with images of a bound boy (Santi) falling in water and stillborn infants preserved in jars. Later, the film’s title is explained by the professor as a type of condition causing a stillborn, though people’s belief in the power of the pickled juice surrounding it represent superstitions prevailing over common sense, as is happening on a grander scale during the fascist war of oppression.
