I remember this being quite big at the time
As big as Pirates of the Caribbean. Anyone recall it's popularity? Now it seems the film has disappeared into oblivion.
Oh well, at least there's still Puss in Boots.

It had a nice buzz around the time of the release over here (Norway), but i remember it went into oblivion as soon as the major hits that year began to near their release dates.
Sad indeed, this movie turned out great.

I'm Jon, and Jon is me. Together, we're one!
I saw this movie in the theatres (in Norway) and loved it big time. I was a teenager at the time and this was a really great movie with humor.
shareI remember that too. It's a bit unfair it disappeared so quickly, it was really fun adventure/comedy with great action and likeable cast. Film had potential to become really good franchise but instead they made weak sequel seven years after. If they just made similar movie 2 years later, with more action (slightly bigger budget) and same cast, I bet it could have much different scenario.
You go Glen Coco...
I was only 9 when this came out but I do remember that it was pretty big from its release in the summer until the winter holidays when it came to video. Then it kind of just dropped off for some reason, I guess because 99 happened to be a big year for movies and bigger stuff came along. At least it had its moment in the summer of 98, I still get nostalgic for it!
sharei love the mask of zorro much more than pirates of the Caribbean
i think pirates at the ned became more popular because of the budget
di you know both movies(Piartes of the caribbean and the mas of zorro) were written by the same screen writters ?
Looking back, this was one of the better popcorn films of that year. Standing out amongst dreck like Armageddon, Godzilla and Deep Impact. I didn't see it in theaters for some reason but when it came out on video, I got very sick with bronchitis and this movie kept me very entertained and distracted from my illness. I need to buy it sometime. I think it would hold up particularly well.
shareI don't remember it as clearly as some others, but do very vaguely now that it's brought up. Also, if you look at the budget ($96) vs box office ($250) that's pretty damn good; so it would appear it was pretty popular.
I think I've seeen it before, but not in a long time. I recently rewatched it and thought it was a lot of fun.

That is why I'm here actually. I remember the movie being very big at the time and everyone loving it but I can't think of a single time anyone has referenced it in at least 8 years. It's sad because it was such a good movie.

I wish I had seen it in a theater. It's the last big studio film I really enjoyed and it holds up very well.
The characters have motives even the main villain and its rather exciting with things that have been done to death like sword duels and horse chases.
The sequel is terrible.
I was in high school when this flick came out in theaters back in '98. It wasn't anywhere near as big as Pirates of the Caribbean was (which was only 5 short years away), but it really felt to me that most of the hype was drummed up due to CZJ, who was this scorching, charismatic beauty who was seemingly on the burst of superstardom at the time.
shareI saw it in the theater when it came out and my audience really enjoyed it. I believe it was one of the surprise hits of the summer, and nobody expected an old-fashioned adventure with a vintage comic hero to compete with the (then) new Godzilla, blockbusters with asteroids (Armageddon and Deep Impact) and Lethal Weapon 4. It wasn't a mega-blockbuster, but I remember it being well-received by critics and everybody I talked to enjoyed it.
A shame that the sequel was so bad.
