Has anyone read the Isabelle Allande novel?

It seems strange that she would write a Zorro novel. But anyway. Have you read it? What is it like and what were your impressions of it?

reply

it's an excellent books it touches the original books, the tyrone powell film and the banderes zorro whilst being original, worth reading.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping to get more than one opinion, but I guess the audience for Zorro movies and Isabelle Allande novels is quite different....which is why I thought it was a bit strange that she wrote one in the first place.

I'll get round to checking it out one day, I'm sure.

I thought it was a well written book that delved into the characters well (not just the man who would be Zorro). I agree; it seemed a bit out of the ordinary for her but she did a good job.

I didn't know Isabel Allende wrote a Zorro novel.

What's the name of the novel? I love her writing style! :)

Just a note for those who might search for her online, be sure to spell her name correctly, ISABEL ALLENDE. TWO "E's" in the last name. ONE "L" and one "E" in the first.

It's a great book, check it. They just released a book called Tales of Zorro which is a bunch of short stories about the masked avenger of early California. She writes a short story as well as Guy Williams J.r. . I just bought this book.

It was okay. It had minor tie-ins to the films starring Tyrone Power and Antonio Banderas/Anthony Hopkins, as well as the old Guy Williams TV show. But it was disappointing. Most of the book was set in Spain, and plodded along. The interesting things happened in California. I was expecting more adventure, but a lot of the plot centered around other characters, some of which were annoyingly female/stereotypical. On its own, it's decent, but compared with the original story and the movies/TV shows, it pales in comparison.

It was basically Zorro's origin story, kinda like his own Casino Royale. I don't know what Isabel Allende's audience is like since I've never read anything else by her, but as a Zorro fan I enjoyed her book a lot. I recommend it.

Isabel Allende's Zorro novel is probably my favorite adventure novel of all time. It was well crafted(undoubtably, it is Allende), full of everything a Zorro lover could want. I loved reading this book particularly because I would get so excited over all the details that would come up. You get to see where Diego learns sleight of hand tricks, his acrobatics, sword fighting, bull whip, and much more. Also, the English edition is so amazingly close to the original Spanish edition. Allende has a very dedicated translator, so you can be sure you are reading her words as she wanted them.

How does it compare to the original Johnston McCulley novel (originally entitled "The Curse of Capistrano")?

reply

They're apparently using the novel as the main inspiration for the upcoming Zorro reboot.
