How did Rafael discover who Zorro was?

Good movie, but that has always bugged me. He just shows up to Zorro's mansion unannounced. I get that the bullet wound confirmed his identity, but how did he know to check De La Vega?

My wife and I just saw it and Rafael mentions something about following his blood trail (without spelling it out) when Zorro's wound is brought up. So he had skilled trackers follow his blood trail to his pad.
