How did Rafael discover who Zorro was?

Good movie, but that has always bugged me. He just shows up to Zorro's mansion unannounced. I get that the bullet wound confirmed his identity, but how did he know to check De La Vega?

It's certainly not stated in the film so i can only surmise he had his soldiers follow Zorro after that fiasco in the square which seemed to be staged specifically to bring Zorro out.

That said, yeah, I think he may have had soldiers follow Zorro to his lair. And although they may not have scene him go into the cave, they probably saw him in the area and put two and two together.

He finally recognized him. You can see the weird look on his when Zorro says "three men, three cuts"

It's almost a "wait... I know that voice."

Just watched that scene again

I don't see a weird look. In fact, upon second viewing, I don't even see how Rafael knew a bullet grazed Zorro's arm. All in all, it doesn't add up.

How do you not see it? At "A small memento of Mexico, Rafael"

He tilts his head down and stares intently at him

reply

He has a sword at his throat, hence the intense stare. Not to mention that Zoro scarred him. Plenty worth of a stare, but nothing to in any way, shape or fashion draw a connection to Don Diego.

I agree, it threw me off that he knew who Zorro was and I was hoping for an explanation. Upon several viewings, it still doesn't make sense. If he already knew who he was, why not personally kill him sooner before he raided the event that day? Something must have let Rafael know on THAT day who his identity was, and it's not hinted at at all.
a small, short scene of somebody watching over Zorro as he rides off would have been enough. But then again, if it's easy to follow him home, you wonder why they didn't do it sooner before he gained his reputation

Look at Rafael's facial expression when Zorro scars him with a Z. He is way too close to him and he recognizes him. Diego's mistake was to get that close to him.

reply

I think that's a bit of a stretch. The movie doesn't make that a plot point at all.

As the Governor of California he probably had never met Zorro up close like that before. Sure Zorro was a nuisance to his government but there's no reason to suspect they'd met before or if they had, Zorro had spoken to him.

But when Zorro says "A small memento of Mexico, Rafael". Notice how reacts when Zorro calls him by name. Let's face it Zorro's voice is pretty recognisable and it's pretty certain that Don Diego de la Vega moved in the same circles as the Governor. Once you suspect someone the mask isn't much of a disguise if you think you who it is underneath it. Then it was just a case of putting two and two together.

Zorro gave himself away when he called him Rafael, instead of Governor. Zorro addressed him as someone who knew him personally, and as others have said, all it took was a little thinking on Rafael's part.
