What do you think happened?

1. Tom picked up the phone in time and didn't drop the shotguns
2. He didn't answer in time, dropped the guns, then was repeatedly called a WANKA! by the three other guys.

I personally think number 2 is the most likely situation.

No. 2 would be in tune with the rest of the film, but personally I hope No. 1 happened. 

Who are they? And what do they want?

Dunno, but it seemed like a homage to The Italian Job.

It wasnt me, it was the other three. Hang them!

Well consider just how lucky they got with everything, I thimk they had enough left to keep their buddy from losing the guns.

He dropped them then answered the phone. 20 minutes later all three are tossing him off the bridge to fish them out. THAT would fit with the overall type of luck they had...
