the ending...wtf? (spoilers)

i thought it was a pretty good film up until the ending, a good film that just didn't get the budget it deserved. I know the last time 1900 and his friend talk he lists off all the reasons why he isn't going to get off, but when it really comes down to it, he just didn't have the balls to do it. life is a gift and just throwing it away like that for no real reason other than he was scared was dumb, he even had that girl that was waiting for him for a while earlier. just not a good ending for me.

I don't think you quite understood the movie. I suggest you to read thoughts about the movie in general, but also about "what the ending meant" on this board. It contains lots of good ideas, and time to time, interpretations.

The only bad thing about the ending is the flying anchor. Just a lack of elegance in a movie filled with a subtle poetic mood.

It is said that, life can only be fully lived, when your comfortable about death. 1900 was comfortable and confident that he had lived his life the way he intended. Sure, leaving the ship may have scared him. But, it wasnt for him. It wasnt the life he chose, and he DID have a choice. He was comfortable with his life. and clearly comfortable withe his death, he was trying to comfort his friend also, about this (the part that makes me cry. Him making jokes, in such a sad moment)

P.S. Sshelly, your signature makes me want to listen to phantom of the opera now XD

The flying anchor was extremely important. The ship was 1900's anchor, what he allowed to keep him from fully living his life. When the ship was destroyed, 1900 was set free, hence the visual of the anchor being flung away.

Sell crazy someplace else. We're all stocked up here.
