How does Tim know that the girl is the daughter of the old man?

The old man never described how his daughter looked, so how does Tim know that the girl is the daughter of the old man?

reply

Pay attention to the stories the girl and the old man tell. They match. Old man's story about his family and his daughter's story about his family are very similar. Thus, 1900 assumes - probably correctly, too big of a coincidence, really - that they are a father and a daughter.

Bull$hit. The girl never gave enough of her story that 1900 could of put that together. Plus, how old was that old man, 75? The girl was maybe 18 or 20? Sorry, I don't see it.

Of course the girl didn't give enough of her story. That's why I said that 1900 *assumed*! There is indeed not enough information there to prove the connection beyond any reasonable doubt. However, everything in the film clearly wants us to think that they were a father and a daughter. It's pointing that way. If you want to stay skeptical, that's fine by me, but you can't claim that the movie isn't trying to convince of this. Concerning the ages, 18-22 sounds about right for the girl. For the old man... 75 is a huge stretch. I'd go with 55-65. He is old, but he's not that old. Besides, a hard farmer life can make you age faster (at least in "looks") as well.

She used the phrase 'the voice of the sea' in her story which he hadn't heard since her father's story.

Yes thats the way I took it also as for the ages rememeber that the farmer said he lost 5 children and she was the youngest so he would have been older to have young daughter

The US censors cut a whopping 45 minutes out of the film. The movie Americans saw is chopped to hell.
