Perhaps the greatest piano movie of all time -- "The Competition," with Richard Dreyfuss and Amy Irving doing some of the finest hand-and-finger fakery ever put on screen. If you have played much at all you'll be amazed at the level of accuracy these actors display in their technique.

It's also one hell of a movie. It just didn't have enough car chases or silicone-enhanced breasts to become really popular with the public.

There's also The Piano (1993), won quite a few awards. One of my favourite "music" movies is The Red Violin (1998), but that obviously isn't piano-based. The latest one is The Beat That My Heart Skipped, pretty good in itself but the music isn't a huge character if that's what you're looking for. There's also a couple of recent-ish movies on Chopin but I haven't seen them though they're supposed to be pretty good- Chopin: Desire for Love (2002) and Impromptu (1991).

Impromptu is well worth the price of admission. It's not really about Chopin, but instead it focuses on a gathering of artists (Chopin, Liszt, George Sands, etc) for a 2-week stay at an aristocrat's house whom they all seem to resent. Hilarity ensues. It's more about the behaviour of artists & aristocrats than it is about Chopin's life, although the story does center around him.

For Beethoven's movies, in addition to Immortal Beloved, we have Beethoven's Nephew and Copying Beethoven. There are a few movies on Tchaikovsky and a six-episode serial on Johann Strauss Jr.

The Red Violin is superb.

Other musicians' oriented movies include The Concert (2009) and The Chorus(2004) and another which I can't recall the title - it is a about a conductor who left his job and moved to a small town trying to build a choir.

Vitus (about a child prodigy), The Piano Teacher (haven't seen it, but I think it actually has little to do with actualy piano playing), The Page Turner (also not a whole lot to do with piano playing, but pretty good) and The Beat that My Heart Skipped.
