Steve Miner mentions it at the start of the commentary but can't remember the actor's name, but is apparently a big star now ("Steve, the director's son")...

I remember hearing Nick Stahl was up for it but my money is on James Franco.

Makes sense. Looks like they pulled Josh Hartnett straight out of bed, bed head and all, to fill the role quickly.

Could be Jake Gyllenhaal. His dad is a director named Stephen, and Jamie Lee is his godmother.

Franco and Stahl don't have director dads named Steve, so I don't know about them.

Oh you're right yeah could've been JG, plus JLC was in that Homegrown movie the same year, didn't know she was his Godmother, cool.
