Michael has no screen presence here.

Maybe they were trying to make Michael seem more realistic in this one, but it doesn't really work for me.

I think this is the least threatening Michael Myers of them all.

I would have to agree, he's much less menacing here unfortunately. The fact that so much of his face is visible behind the eye holes, instead of darker like the other films, definitely does not help.

When I saw this in the theater back in summer '98 I didn't really notice how bad the mask(s) were in this, but after a recent rewatch there is no doubt about how awful they were. For starters the eye holes are so big you can clearly see Michael's green eyes and even some of his face. A big part of what makes 'The Shape' so fearsome is the fact that his expressions are always hidden behind the black void of his eyeholes. The other issue is the actor's body language. Michael Myers doesn't run or even walk briskly, he stalks and is patient with a minimum of movement. In H2O he takes on more of a Jason Vorhees presence, with brute power and strength replacing his familiar style. I thought the actor playing him did some of his head movements pretty well tho when Laurie is throwing the knives at him. Also the late 90's 'SCREAM' inspired score didn't help matters. That kind of score works well with a Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer or an Urban Legend, but isn't ideal for a 'HALLOWEEN' sequel. Carpenter's iconic sounds were severely missed.

Even his pace was off. He terrorized at a glacier pace, that to me is truer to the character.

The least threatening would sound just about right... and yet, Zombie’s Michael was so over-the-top (his exaggerated size, making the killings as brutal as they can be they’re almost cartoonish), I have a hard time finding that one menacing and creepy. Not a bad Michael, though.

Michael in H20 moves quickly (that didn’t hurt him in the sixth movie, where you really do see him run), and the fact that we can clearly see his eyes is off-putting. But even so, he remains one of my favorites in the franchise. Reason? Because while he doesn’t display the same chilling demeanor, I always felt that this Michael’s stance, walk, and even the way he swung his knife felt closer to Nick Castle’s portrayal than some previous and future Michaels. Evidently that’s not how everyone sees it, and although I wouldn’t disagree with the notion that his presence isn’t that dominating, he makes an effective Michael imho. If only his eyes had been covered...
