1936's "Showboat" as well as the 1937 failed epic "The Road Back" were mentioned-But only in passing in this film.
The failure at the box office of the latter picture was not necessarily Mr Whale's fault I might add as Universal Studio extensively cut large parts of the film which had then to be subsequently reshot after protests were received from the German consul based in LA.
Going back to your original query though I suppose with hindsight it must be difficult to condense an entire film career into a 105 minute pic & 70 years later James Whale is generally remembered now more for his early 1930's horror pictures than anything else.
