Jame Whale's hair color?

Of'course as an old man he is grey but in this film, as a kid he has red hair and while filming Bride of Frankenstein in his 40s he has light blonde hair. But in every pic I've seen of Whale in real life(which are all b&w) his hair looks very dark as light blonde wouldn't show up dark in a b&w photo. Anyone know?

Whale's hair, and McKellen's, are both meant to have been SNOW WHITE.

In his youth James Whale had red hair, but by the time of JOURNEY'S END he was starting to turn grey.

"I do hope he won't upset Henry..."
