Significance of the pennies and the movie Triangle (Spoilers)
I just watched the movie Triangle with Melissa George for the 5th time. I hated it at first because it seemed stupid because I was beyond confused. I love looping and time travel movies, but Triangle was so brilliant I just didn't get it because a lot of things went over my head. After coming to the message board about that movie and reading a lot of various explanations on opinons on what their take was on the significance of what transpired immediately after the car accident and the role of the taxi driver, I was inspired to watch it again (fives times!!!)Now I love it.because it's so clever and original and I learned something new on each viewing.
So, Im sure most of you are probably wonder WTH anything in this film has to do with my admiration of the writer/s of Triangle given these two movies are NOTHING alike. Well I haven't seen From Hell since it came out on DVD over a decade ago, so watching it now I'm catching a lot of things I didn't pay much mind the first time.
When Johnny Depp's character is asked why he places pennies over the eyes over the corpes he explains they're for the Ferryman that takes the body across the river into the land of the dead, if she didn't pay him, she'd wander forever lost between the two worlds.
IMO, like many other who watched Triangle, I now am even more certain this describes the role of the taxi driver who she promises she will be back to pay and ends up never returning to pay him and in the movie is forever lost (looping). The taxi driver (ferryman) take her to the dock (the body of water representing the "river" she crosses when she goes sailing with the others). Then everybody dies in the storm. Her friends on the boat. Her and her son in the car accident represent the land of the dead as she is on a nostop loop which always ends up with EVERYONE dying. She tries, but can't change this because she can never get back to the ferryman/ taxi driver to pay him.
Sorry for the rant you guys. LOL. BTW all of this is my personal interpretation. I could be wrong, but I had to come on the board and mentioned this to see if this scene with Johnny Depp and the pennies sparked the same inerest in anyone else who liked Triangle.
