My memory is fading and I want to get this straightened out. Depp's character mentions that his wife passed away giving birth to (what he was told was) a son. Are we to assume the baby died as well? Was it brought up again at some point?

shareI always assumed the child was a birth defect hence his visions of deformities.
That doesn't really explain his wife dying in childbirth though.
I think it implies that the baby was stillborn. Since the midwife didn't let him see the childs body he only knows second hand that that child was a boy.
And women and infants dying during the childbirth process was extremly common in those days, due to lack of modern medicine even the most miniscule complication could have been fatal.
