How come Johnny's clothes burn, but Reed's don't tear?
Well?
sharethey are made of unstable molecules which correspond to their powers. Its explained in the movie. Human Torch's costume did not burn off too...it was only his regular clothes that previously burned off.

But Reed's regular clothes were somehow able to stretch when he stretched. There's a scene where he's wearing a lab coat, for example.
sharean oversight by the writers maybe?
shareCan't remember... did the lab coat itself stretch, or did he just stretch out of it?
shareIn the comics I rememember, mid-60s-early 70s, Reed's regular stretched, but not as much as his costume. Don't recall any explanation. I mean, whenever Bruce Banner changed into the Hulk, he always ended wearing those raggedy purple pants, nor matter what he'd been wearing beforehand.
May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?
At least in the incredibles they had scenes with Edna Mode where all the special costume properties were explained. I failed to see how you can make a molecule that stretches 10x, heats to 4000 degrees, and becomes sympathetically invisible, and if there are 3 separate fabrics, the color-matching would BE A BITCH !!! :-)
