Is This The Last...?

Man's man movie. I mean real adult Man's movie. So many things go un-said but are understood. The emotional themes are simple but really resonate. There's so little that's hokey or based on pleasing an audience with throwaway, cliche humor. What humor there is comes very naturally. I also always loved that even though Banderas was the banner name the rest of the cast are just as important and carry just as much. There's a great balance to the cast. Saw it in the theatre and didn't want it to end. It definitely could use some filling out. It's a shame McTiernan couldn't have made it in the last 5 years as studios don't seem to be blinking an eye at 2 hour plus running times. Of course he would never have that cast.

I think Tom Cruise tried to replicate the old school "man's man" films with Jack Reacher, a film that wanted to be far closer to the tone of Dirty Harry than his usual action adventures. It did have a lot of hokey elements though; the beautiful female lawyer and the middle aged tough guy putting cocky teenagers in their place, all pure male fantasy (but still entertaining).

My partner and my sister both love the film as much as I do.

Or just humour me when I want to watch it constantly so who knows

Yes, definitely a masculine movie.

Another one I can think of with similar feel is Carpenter's The Thing from the 80s. No female roles whatsoever, no pointless love stories, just a bunch of guys worrying about their own survival and actually making logical decisions for a change.

I just watched The Thing about a week ago and made that connection for the very same reason.

A recent movie that hits upon many of the same themes Bobby_vs_Satan mentioned is The Grey starring Liam Neeson. Definitely worth your time if you haven't seen it.

Not so keen on The Grey. But I think Arnold Schwarzenegger's Predator is another film in this category (not coincidentally by the same director).

Yeah, Predator is most definitely one of those types of films.

Master and Commander is another post-The 13th Warrior film of this sort (I don't believe there's a single female in the entire film).

A few othar films that are somewhat similar Man's man movies:

Emperor of the North (Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Keith Carradine)

Blood of Heroes (Rutger Hauer, Joan Chen, Vincent D'Onofrio) Despite Joan Chen as a main character, there's almost no romantic element, would still considar this ovarwhelmingly directed at a masculine audience.

Duck, You Sucker AKA A Fistful of Dynomite, anothar oldie, but goodie, starring Rod Steiger and James Coburn. Besides an implied rape at the beginning, no women at all in it.

And for laughably outdated special effects, but evan so, one of the most epic fistfights evar choreographed - They Live, starring Roddy Piper and Keith David.
