Give the OP a break. It's clearly stated in the book that it was partly based on real stuff, but not so in the movie.
EDIT: and apparently that was a hoax on Crichton's part. Damn! :o
When this came out i had not paid attention to any talk of the book
When it got to the part with the slave girl being lifted over what should have been a horizontal pole as if was looking over a door transom I remembered reading the history of the viking the year before that had chapters from Ibn Fadlan. And that i had an unread as yet history of the arans with more of his chapters
Yes, it's pretty cool stuff.
