Was it suppose to be that by becoming human, he know goes to the place in the church and then someone kills him. But, if that is true why didn't he have someone destroy his wings before? Thanks
The whole "going through the arch and coming out pure" idea had been all but forgotten in the church as a whole. When the NJ church reinstated it, he saw it has his loophole to go home. By the time he got to the church, he wasn't right in the head, so he got distracted by releasing his rage before he cut off his wings and walked through the church. It was, within the timeline of the movie, always his intention to do it, he just got derailed for a bit.
I'm guessing it's because then, the movie would have just been over.
That means we wouldn't have gotten to meet Alanis Godisette (and who knows how long god would've been stuck on life support). Bethany wouldn't have died, or been brought back with her uterus (and her faith) intact & functional.
Seems like a much less satisfying ending than the one Kevin Smith gave us!
But to address your point "in-universe": You're right that killing Bartleby once he lost his wings would have stopped him. The question is, how? Jay emptied his clip shooting off Bartleby's wings, so the gun he picked up was useless as a weapon. And neither Rufus nor Serendipity really seems equipped (mentally or physically) to kill with their bare hands. So, they were unarmed, and before they had time to do anything Bartleby was headed into the church.
How can no 1 remember this. God is supposed to be infalable. Bartlebee and Loki were banished by god from heaven. They were not supposed to be able to get back in no matter what. If they lost their wings and walked through the church then all of their sins would be forgiven and they would be able to go to Heaven. Since god is infalable this would cause the world to cease to exist or something along the lines of a catostraphic event. Sorry havent watch the movie in awhile.
He has to cut his own wings off to become mortal. By shooting his wings off they "did him a favor" hence The Muse's line. So now he can't become mortal, because he has no wings to cut off. If I'm getting this correctly. Just watched the movie for the first time yesterday.
he didn't have to cut them off himself. they did him a favor because he needed to lose his wings for his plan to work. it didn't matter who removed them.
it's a valid question, and someone already answered it: he got sidetracked with his vengefulness and rage-induced bloodlust.
just to clarify, his plan had 3 stages: 1. walking thru the arches (to be purified of sin, via the badly misunderstood application of the Catholic church's institution of plenary indulgences) 2. ripping off his wings (to become mortal again, since in his current state as a fallen angel, he could not re-enter heaven) 3. suicide by cop (he can't kill himself since it's yet another sin, so he'd get the cops to kill him. think of the death as a means to "teleport" or "respwan" back in heaven.)
but instead of sticking to his plan... he ended up throwing ppl down from the sky in a fit of murderous rampage. that of course, gave our heroes time to arrive on the scene in the nick of time, save the world, blah blah.

Number 1 and 2 should be switched in order. First lose the wings, then walk through as a human.
He didn't have someone cut his wings off before because he knew the last Scion and her gang would be on their way and if his wings are destroyed then they could just grab a gun and kill him before he enters the church. Jay shooting Bartleby's wings off emptied the gun and made Bartleby human so now he can pass through the arch and come out just in time for all of New Jersey's finest to gun him down and undo all of existence.
They didn't know if he had gone through the church doors before they arrived. If he had, then he was already forgiven. If he stays in angel form, he can't be killed and go to heaven. By turning him human, they make it so he can be killed and if he's been forgiven he would go to heaven.
They couldn't take the chance; it would have been better for him to stay in angel form.
A key point a lot of people miss is that Church law only governs humans. Angels answer directly to God and are ineligible for the plenary indulgence offered by the Church. However, as humans, they'd be eligible. That's why they had to become human.
