Waiting for the centenary of a church for the loophole???

Hi - this is probably my favourite Kevin Smith film XD I have a question though, I might be totally misquoting/misremembering but why do Loki and Bartleby wait for the centenary of a church in America???? if they came to Europe they would have been able to get back to heaven and destroy humanity years ago, no?? Are they stuck in America? they can clearly fly....
sorry if it sounds a bit confused but well I've only just noticed this part.
Any help appreciated :)

The first scene of the movie explains the "loophole" and why it has to be that church. It was at that church that they announced "catholic wow" or whatever George Carlin called it, and proclaimed that all that pass into his church would be cleared of all sin. As Loki explains anything the church canonizes becomes dogma (IE the title of the movie). Because of this, Bartleby and Loki had to pass through those doors to be wiped of their sin and thus re enter the kingdom of god ("home"). They could not enter that church until they became mortal though.. that part I still don't understand.

Matt Damon getting drunk instead of entering the church confused me too. Why did he have to be killed? That part loses me.

I understand that (thank you for your answer by the way) But they were banished to Wisconsin for eternity (by "god!!!!!!) which would surely mean that they couldn't leave Wisconsin. How did they get passed that eternity thing?!

They could enter the church as angels, but they had to die to return to Heaven which they couldn't as angels. And the plenary indulgence applied to humans only. as well. So that had to become human.
