So do Loki and Barnaby go to hell?

Or are they forgiven after they die? I don't think its ever mentioned. I just really felt for these characters. I would be so sad for them if they did end up in hell.

he did say he was sorry befor god killed him so maby she let him into heaven i dont know

The whole premise of the movie was that they wouldn't ever be allowed into heaven and all existence would be negated if they did. So yeah, they would have gone to hell seeing as there is nowhere else for them to go.

Good thing it's all fiction.

Apart from purgatory

Can't you see
I'm Fabulous Baby!

reply

Not really...The premise was that they couldn't 'go around' gods creed(via the church). God coming down and deciding herself that they were allowed back into heaven means she has not been proven wrong, as she is the one who decided to change her mind.

reply

I felt strongly their plight. Specially Loki, Matt Damon's character. I've always had a weak spot for Matt.

reply

I had the same question myself, but I think I agree with Brian's conclusion - by exploiting the religious loophole, Bartleby and Loki were going to be allowed into Heaven whether God liked it or not. By coming down herself and forgiving them, the loophole wasn't really in effect, since neither Loki nor Bartleby had gone into the church prior to being killed. Kind of like the difference between someone breaking into your home or being invited. They get in either way, but it's not a crime if you let them in.

Agreed, thought so too.

The implication that everyone in my family got was they did not go to Heaven or Hell. Oblivion was their destination.

The basis for Christianity has always been whoever "believes" that Jesus is the one true son of God would gain entrance into Heaven and have everlasting life. Based on the end of the movie and God's interaction with Bartelby I truly like to think that they did get into Heaven. Both, at the end, were clearly sorry for their actions. Bartelby's apology to God is truly heartfelt and I believe that God isn't vengeful and spiteful. I think they do go home, just as mortals.

reply

Agreed with this. It would be especially cold-hearted and cruel for God to feel the need to personally come to Earth and send the two of them to Hell. Forgiving them following their apology, changing her mind, and enabling them to go back to Heaven on her terms seems much more fitting with the God they set up in the movie.

That's the Protestant view of Christianity. This movie is about Catholicism and more specifically Catholic dogma and the thing about dogma is, it's inflexible.

In the movie, existence would be negated if god was ever proven to be fallible. So god could not forgive them since reversing her own decree would be admitting she was wrong to issue the decree in the first place, making her fallible.

Actually Metatron says very early in the movie where they'll end up: outside the Gates of Heaven for all eternity. Arguing with each other like an old married couple, forever. Which is a very appropriate resolution for them, I think.

reply

They murdered a bunch of people so I'm thinking...yeah straight to hell.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

reply

I don't know why , I don't remember all of the dialogue but for some weird reason , I always took it that Bartleby was more like , 'removed from existence' , not just killed and sent wherever.

reply

Well they had taken their wings off and become moral had been thru the gates of the church, so are forgiven against gods wishes (LOL) and get into heaven, but it has the feel they are destroyed....

reply

(3 years late but who cares...) They hadn't been in the church yet. After the Muse sees Loki's wings are cut off, she asks him if he'd already gone through the archway and Bartleby says that they hadn't but he was planning for them both to go through just in time for cops to kill them when they come out, thus letting them back into Heaven. They both end up dead before that can happen. I think since they both express regret for their actions before they die but are killed before they can truly repent, the implication is that they ultimately end up in Purgatory.
