A line that's always bugged me

The muse stated, "Elvis was an artist, but that didn't stop him form joining the service in time of war."

1. Elvis was drafted.

2. It wasn't time of war. He actually had a fairly cushy assignment in Germany and lived fairly well for an Army private.

Was this Smith's mistake or the characters?

I think it was very tongue-in-cheek.

Its still better than many other musicians who dodged the draft outright.

I think it's just Kevin's way of paying homage. Like really who care that Elvis was drafted? Not disrespecting him but only the true Elvis fans know that he was drafted, that quote by the Muse was more of a dig at Azrael by stating that even Elvis didn't dodge his duties even if he was assigned a cushy position and didn't do actual combat. He didn't run from what was expected of him.

A better reference that Kevin should have used in the movie would have been Audie Murphy since he was in actual combat compared to that of Elvis, but Audie's was before he became famous and reeenacted his experience in the film To Hell and Back but I suppose he wasn't as well known as compared to Elvis. Another person Smith could have substituted Elvis for is Clark Gable who enlisted after wife Carole Lombard's untimely death during a plane crash while working on War Bonds. He may have made aerial training films but he was a man of honor joinin the Army in honor of Carole Lombard.

It waa the Cold War, so it could have turned very nasty.....in defence of Elvis. He might have got his blue suede shoes stepped on then.

reply

They had a draft in a non war time? Why?
But he DID serve even instead of going AWOL, which is basically what Azreal did.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

My point was never about Elvis, but the glaring factual error. While a bit older, Jimmy Stewart would have been a better example. He actually had to push repeatedly to get assigned to a combat unit since his status as a well known actor would normally have had him doing tours and pushing war bonds.

Elvis is far more well known. That's why he's the better example. A joke need not be 100% accurate to be funny.

You are sin.

He recieved a draft letter they delayed it so he could finish a movie.
