Danielle's stepmother being nice?

There's one scene in the movie that always feels out of place to me... the scene where Danielle's brushing her stepmother's hair & she pulls her aside to tell her to more or less be happy because things can "always be worse." And don't get me wrong, it was a very nice scene between the two but it always feels odd considering how nasty she is for the majority of the movie.

-Who is it?
-It's Grandpa. And it sounds like he's gotten into the horseradish again.

I think there are 2 reasons for the brief niceness and neither has to do with Danielle. One, the Baroness was just using Danielle as something to talk to. Kind of like some talk to their pets. She just felt like talking so she did. Two, I think the Baroness had true feelings for her late husband, Danielle's father. She had a vulnerable moment when she spoke about him then she quickly changed back to her hardened self.

I think she was hardened to begin with because he died without telling her he loved her, as he did Danielle, as well as leaving her "here," meaning at a property she considered beneath her. She wants to love Danielle, because she sees her late husband in her stepdaughter, but can't get past her Husband's "slight" before he passed away. So yeah, while most of the things she said was just to use Danielle as a sounding board, there was the briefest moment of vulnerability and affection before she remembered herself and went mean again.
