Rodmilla never stood a chance to care about Danielle...

Well they were stacked against each other from the start, and doomed to be enemies.

I mean, Rodmilla:
- Came from wealth (and thus has the expected flaws that come with it, even Henry had some of that in him just remember how he humiliated Danielle at the ball)
- Was married to Auguste in a forced marriage most likely (how otherwise would she hardly know him?), out of necessity (think Kate Winslet in Titanic). That hardens one's character no matter how nice Auguste actually was.
- Resented marrying bellow her class (she a baroness, he a commoner), remember her "you can't leave me here!" when Auguste kicked the bucket.
- Resented Danielle before she even met her (thanks to Auguste talking about her nonstop).
- Literally came to hate Danielle due to Auguste giving Danielle his last words instead of her (couldn't he have said "I love you BOTH"?).
- Was already saddled with 2 daughters of her own.
- Was saddled with an estate she had no idea how to run, nor even intended to run.

WTF did you expect?
It's obvious Danielle was well aware of this, and taking that into consideration spared her life and shipping to the Americas.

Exactly! I totally agree. Rodmilla's treatment of Danielle was wrong, but I see her side and where she was coming from.

I only hope Maleficient is depicted similarly in her own movie to come out this year.

Well rounded villains are in my opinion the best ones...

I agree to a point however you could see from the moment they met that Rodmilla was never going to care about her in anyway, she was a nasty greedy cow, I don't think him telling her he loved her before he died would have changed anything, also him talking about Danielle all the time is understandable, she was his daughter and all he had of course he is going to talk about her all the time as most parents would so that is no excuse to hate Danielle.

reply

No need to hate her though- she was an innocent child.
Rodmila was depicted as mean and cold hearted and self serving.

You don't have to love a girl to choose not to actively torment her.

Rodmilla could have loved Danielle if she really, really, really wanted to. Or at least be civil to her, all things considered.

Appeasement is hoping the bear eats you last.

I don't think she could have loved or be civil to Danielle as she couldn't be loving or civil to her own children.
