a) It makes for a nice gag line when she's talking to one of the ants about how she's a black widow widow.
b) ALL SPIDERS ARE CARNIVORES, with most of them eating other insects. Same goes for the praying mantis and most species of ladybug. The only reason you're thinking about this is because black widows are also harmful to humans.
